So we celebrated as best we knew how. We started out the celebration by surprising him with a cake at his work. Several of the staff members even came to sing Happy Birthday and enjoy cake too.
Then when he arrived home, I had the suitcase packed, directions written out, and we were off to an unknown to him destination. As he drove he had a list of what color card to ask for and from which child. (Karl Mikal and Heidi each had 4/5 cards all different colors to give him as he called for a color. This worked great especially since Heidi is a pro at her colors.) The final stopping point was the Great Wolf Lodge.
.
We spent one night there and had a great time. As we pulled in Karl Mikal got so excited because he remembered being there with my family last summer. As we walked down the hallway to the elevators, Karl Mikal was literally jumping up and down with excitement. After we changed and got on swimsuits Heidi joined in the excitement, by saying, "Go SWIMMING!" with as much emphasis as she could put on swimming. After dinner, swimming, and story time we went back to the room, sang Happy Birthday again and enjoyed a cookie cake. Then we got up Friday and spent the rest of the day at the GWL. You can stay all day after you check out until the park closes. We left the GWL at 5:30 with Karl Mikal saying he didn't want to leave as he drifted off to sweet dreams! Poor guy was exhausted!
.
Then Saturday evening I had planned a family and friends surprise party for Karl. He had no idea and fell for all I told him. It was great! He wound up having a work function to go to from 1-4 on Sat, so when he arrived back home around 4:15, he was greeted by family and friends.
.
He has told me several times how much he enjoyed his birthday. I am so glad and was so happy to do it for him. Thank you Karl for being such a wonderful husband, father and christian man. I love you for honesty, integrity, servant heart, and all the love you show our family and others. Happy 40th! Here's to the next 40!

Story time at the Great Wolf. Tonight for the first time we all went to a drive thru restaurant and ordered dinner for everyone! Kids included! Yesterday we were given the go ahead to introduce other foods that contain eggs with Karl Mikal. So we loaded up and went to Chick-Fil-A. (Yes, I know there are much more healthy options available for dinner, but give this mom a break. I have been cooking nearly every meal since he was 10 months old. For this girl that could mean many things. I started looking for her and found her with a prize and a very, VERY proud look. This is the plane that Karl was a navigator on while he was in the Air Force. Karl took the day off Friday so that we could leave Thursday after he got off work and be there all day Friday and Saturday for the air show. We had a great time! Friday morning we got things together and headed out to the base. Karl had a great time reminiscing as he drove on base. It was also neat to see exactly where he worked while there. He was able to sit in on several briefings and hear about new ways the B1 is being used. Very neat! We were also able to go into the simulator for the B1. Karl Mikal and our nephew Luke were able to join us for this part. At first Karl Mikal was unsure, but then warmed up and sat in his daddy's lap and "flew" the plane. Luke was glad to sit in the pilot's chair and fly. He mostly enjoyed the take-off landing and flipping in the air. Unfortunately we were not able to take any pictures of the simulator (it is all top secret...in my opinion I am glad to know that our government still keeps some things secret!) I am so glad that we went. Karl was able to meet up with some old friends and catch up. It was fun! Below are some pics. Most of them are from the air show on Saturday. Enjoy!
.
Karl and Karl Mikal next to a big model of the B1-Bomber.

.

Luke next to another large model F-16. So my kids are both wearing their pajamas under their clothes. Poor Heidi! I am sure she will not be happy with this picture on day. I told some people on the shuttle that I didn't plan for my daughter to be dressed from the 80's that day. Actually, I remember having some high tops that would have matched her outfit perfectly...same colors and even a palm tree on the side. Karl Mikal really didn't like it, so Karl took him and hung out inside one of the planes and watched the show. Heidi didn't fuss too much, but then fell asleep. Maybe next time we can watch the show, get a few pictures, and not have fussy children. It did make me feel a little better to see a few other kids who didn't like the show either because of the noise.
.
Sweet girl!

.
I really like this picture.
.
And this one too!
.

Please remember to pray for all of our military who are currently serving and those who have served. Karl Mikal is doing great with his milk therapy. Today he was challenged with 7 mL. Here is a picture from tonight when he took his dose. Several have asked if he likes the milk. Yes. Friday I took Karl Mikal to my parents house so that Karl and I could more easily attend a marriage seminar at our church. I am picking him up Thursday. No one was sure how Karl Mikal would do, since this is the first time he has been away from us for any extended period of time. He adores my parents, but being away from Mom and Dad can still be a bit unnerving. Based on the pics below, I think he is having a great time. Just a bit of background information...I grew up on a ranch and my parents still live there. The tractors are at the top of the road and Karl Mikal asks to ride the mule (ATV) up there to see them. He has often asked to see them, but hasn't wanted to get on them until today.

He absolutely loves "driving" our cars. Seriously!!!I was looking at a friend's blog this week and noticed that under my name on their blog, it said 2 months! That just can't be! Has is seriously been 2 months since my last blog. My apologies to anyone that still checks us out. I will try to do better.

.

Rather than blogging about what has gone on the last few months, I will instead catch you up on the milk therapy and Heidi's last photo session. God has blessed us so much. We go to the allergist weekly for challenges where they up his dose. We have had to miss some weeks due to illness, coughs, wheezing, etc., but we don't consider that a set back. We feel that God is definitely in control of this therapy and are thrilled to have been so blessed this far. Below are pictures showing the sizes of the doses. He gets his dose twice a day.

.

This is the diluted dose. The reactions have shown up as an upset tummy (either bad diapers or throw-up). Nothing too regular and nothing that tells the allergist to slow down. As I said earlier, we feel so blessed to have made it this far. God continues to stay in control of this whole therapy. Our prayer is that he will allow Karl Mikal to make it all the way through the therapy and be able to enjoy milk, ice cream, cheese, you name it! We will see what God has planned!

.

As for Heidi, she is great! She is scooting all over the place. She can get up on all fours as if she is going to crawl, but then fakes us all out and goes back to her army crawl. She is pulling up on anything and everything...stable or not and gives the best smiles. Just last week she cut two bottom teeth. She is such a cutie!

.

Below is a link to the last photo session of her and our family. Feel free to take a look. (Click on Heidi.) It was supposed to be a 6 month session, but due to bad weather she is actually almost 7 months old. You will need to put in Karl's e-mail address: karlgsch@aol.com and the password to view the slideshow is h-6 . I will say it again. Rejoice!" Philippians 4:4

Today Karl Mikal had his "RUSH" visit for the food desensitization therapy. It was a long day of 5 and a half hours in the doctors office, but so well worth it. Ever since Karl Mikal was diagnosed with his allergies we have prayed that he would overcome them and today we started that process.

On our way to the office, we started talking to Karl Mikal about where we were going and what we were going to do. We told him that we were going to the doctor and she would give him some medicine, but there would be no ow-ees. That stuck in his mind. Not only did he repeat that in the car, but when the nurse came and got us, he immediately started saying, "No ow-ees, no ow-ees." She then reassured him that there would be no ow-ees.

We had to go in at 9:00 am. By 9:15 he had his first dose of a milk/mostly water solution and our eyes were glued to him watching for any signs of a reaction. His cheek got red and warm to touch and he was playing with his tongue a little bit, but nothing too significant to keep the doctors from proceeding. Then an hour later we had the second dose and by 12:30 he was given the fourth and final dose for the visit. He did great! What an answered prayer! We had to stay in the office for 2 hours after the final dose for observation and our sweet little guy fell asleep.

So where do we go from here...each day we will give him two premeasured doses of the milk/water solution. We will watch him closely and look for signs of an allergic reaction. After one week, we will go back for a "challenge" visit. At that visit they will increase the amount of milk and we will wait one hour to look for any signs of a reaction. If no reaction, we will go home and repeat that dose in the evening and twice daily for one week. Then we will go back and do the same thing again. This will be done for about 15-20 weeks as we slowly build up his tolerance (hopefully). At anytime during the treatment we could have to stop. If he does react negatively we will step back and do the previous amount of milk and try again.

After the 15-20 weeks, we will continue on our own at home giving him milk daily for 6 months. Then we will go "cold turkey" for 1 month. At the end of the one month, we will go back in for a challenge. He will be given about a cup of milk. If there is no reaction, then we are done!

Leading up to this day was quite exciting, frightening, and overwhelming for us. Most of the time I was at peace about doing it. I knew that God was and is in control and no matter the outcome would remain in control. However, the thought of giving him something that could make him so terribly sick was extremely frightening. That is why after the first dose, neither of us (Karl or I) took our eyes off of him. I am so thankful that God did allow him to make it through today with flying colors. Thank you Lord!!!

I told my sister that we are taking baby steps and with each step forward we will praise God and with any steps back we will continue to praise Him. We ask all of you to keep Karl Mikal in your prayers. It would be so wonderful to overcome this allergy. It will be a year of baby steps and possibly some set backs. So please pray for strength for all of us, healing for Karl Mikal, and patience as we go through the therapy. Also, please pray for all the other kids we know (and don't know) with food allergies. And a loud praise to God for all the children who have successfully gone through this therapy. What a wonderful relief for those parents!

There is bonus song at the end of the Shedaisy Christmas CD that says, "How can I keep from singing?" It is about singing out to God for all that he has done and continues to do. That is how I have felt nearly all day, even when I woke up this morning. As we were in the doctors office and we would get one dose down, the song I sang in my head was the Doxology...(Praise God from whom all blessings flow...) as well as Shout Hallelujah!, and the song about blessings. The one that says, "Every blessing you pour out I turn back to praise....you give and take away... (If only John Scott were there, we would have been singing in the office.) Thank you God for loving us all so much and for taking care of my little boy!

Anna
Thank you all!Karl and Annahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14059736944728285626noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7709177905880166669.post-26502740891311364222009-12-22T11:11:00.000-08:002009-12-22T21:30:25.068-08:00An update...finallyOkay, I know you may be thinking that I am a terrible blogger...well, I have no excuse other than to say that I must be. Please forgive me. We have been quite busy. I will give you a quick update and some pictures (the pictures are my favorite part :))
.

In October the kids and I went to Louisiana and spent most of the week. We had a great time and were able to see quite a few friends and work in a few mule (ATV) rides for Karl Mikal. He absolutely loves being at Modder and Poppy's house. We also had two cousin birthday parties to go to as well. And in October Karl Mikal was in the hospital with bronchialitis. We only spent one night, but that was enough. He is doing much better now and has only needed the inhaler a few times since.
.

November was also busy with Thanksgiving. We went to Lubbock to visit family and had a great time there.
.

This month we have celebrated 2 cousins birthdays and are looking forward to Christmas. We also just got back from the allergist office for a 1 year follow up and to get some testing done for the Oral Desensitization Therapy we are scheduled to start on January 14th. I will write more about that later.
.

On to the pictures...here are some from October.

.

Heidi posing with our (mine and hers) namesake. We had to send them a picture of our little one to put in a slide show. What mom doesn't just love taking pictures of her baby? I will never forget that morning. It was a one of the longest mornings I have ever had. Everything from the blueberry muffin that kicked it all off, to big Karl passing out, to the ambulance ride to Children's is forever in my brain.

Over the last year I have felt a full range of emotions about living with food allergies. I am sure that there will still be a full range of emotions as we continue to live with food allergies. I am always so excited when a recipe works, but frustrated when the exact same recipe doesn't work again. I sometimes get so tired of having to pack up a lunch for Karl Mikal everywhere we go and I find myself irritated that we can't just go through the drive thru line and pick something up. My heart lights up when I make something and Karl Mikal looks at me and says "Yummie". I am sometimes embarrassed at the scene I feel like we are making when we do eat at a restaurant. I find myself wanting to explain why we are wiping the table down and the highchair and bringing our own food in for him and using a disposable place mat even after we have wiped the table and when Karl and I eat everything with a fork/knife including the bread that was made to tear and be eaten with your hands. And even after all of that we are still a stress case because everything in the building we are in feels contaminated and dangerous for our little guy.

But at the end of the day I say a prayer of thanking God for my little guy. I wouldn't trade him for the world!!!

Here are some pics from that day .

You can see the IV in his arm. That was no fun at all! The pink on his arms are hives that came back after he got sick just after we were told we were about to be released. This changed their minds and that is when the IV went in to give him more meds since he just got rid of the ones that they gave him earlier.

Things weren't exciting enough, so Big Karl decided to liven things up by passing out when Karl Mikal got his IV. He was told to sit and was given oxygen. This is after sitting for a while.

Here we were getting ready for the ambulance ride. On the way to the fair and several days leading up to the day we picked to go, I couldn't help but think of all the fun Karl Mikal was going to have on the kiddie rides. He is so into driving his little Cozy Coupe and sitting in the driver's seat of our car, that I just knew he would have a blast riding the little cars, boats, and motorcycles at the fair.

So as soon as we got into the fair we bought our tickets and quickly found the kid rides. Now Karl thought it might be best to start off with a ride that one of us could ride with him. However, I thought it would be best to start with something he would enjoy like the cars. Karl Mikal spotted the little boats and was so excited. Karl took him in and set him in the boat with the red sail. (He didn't want the blue sail.) As Karl is buckling up Karl Mikal I begin to see to look of fear come across my little boy's face. Karl looks to me and I motion for him to come on out and lets just give it a go. Well, all of my happy images of Karl Mikal loving the rides quickly go away. By the time he made three laps in the boat, he had taken his binkie out, and was wailing. The whole time his head is shaking NO! NO! The kind man operating the boats stopped the ride for us to get our screaming child off. Needless to say, we didn't ride any more rides.

This is the boat that he picked out.
He really didn't think this was any fun!
Sweet, sweet Daddy! Sometimes it is hard to believe that we have been married 4 years and other times it seems like it has been longer (in a good way). Thinking back to where we started and where we are now is a lot of fun for us. Let me see if I can highlight the details:

Set up on a blind date in Abilene, TX - dated a few months and decided it just wasn't going to work out

Almost two years later both of us moved to Dallas (without the other ones knowledge) and saw each other on I-20 - traffic was slow, so we rolled down the windows and exchanged numbers

Finally went to dinner about 5 months later - Karl said, " Wouldn't this be a great story to tell our grandkids?" Without much of a pause, I told him that I wasn't going to date him again.

After about five months of just being friends, we started dating again.

Dated about a year and a half and decided to get married

Got married during Hurricane Rita - the all outdoor wedding was moved indoors in about 24 hours - our preacher cancelled and my uncle married us - and we left a day late for our honeymoon...fun times and many good memories

Celebrated our first anniversary at Mount Rushmore

Celebrated our second anniversary by going to see the Lion King at the State Fair

Celebrated our third anniversary by going to see the Eagles in concert

Now our fourth anniversary and two kids later we had a nice dinner at home with Winnie the Pooh on in the background and Pooh singing, "I'm Just a Little Black Rain Cloud" and Heidi nursing.

I wouldn't trade it for the world!

The small plates on the corner belong to Karl Mikal. And yes, this will be a great story to tell our grandkids. :)Karl and Annahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14059736944728285626noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7709177905880166669.post-72483809075217377262009-09-13T11:13:00.000-07:002009-09-13T12:38:45.894-07:00Karl Mikal and Heidi

I can't believe that our sweet boy is 20 months old and our baby girl is almost 2 months old! Time has certainly flown by. Since this is our first post, I thought that I would fill you in on the kids and how we are adjusting. Here goes...

Karl Mikal is a great big brother. He loves his little sister. He pats her on the back, helps change diapers by getting wipes ready, carries her binkie around the house, and loves to be on the floor beside her. We haven't seen any negative behavior towards his little sister. Thank goodness!!! Of course, adding a new sister to the house didn't come without any changes from him. Karl and I both agree that for a while things became more dramatic. A fall that used to just be a fall, was a big deal. He gets louder and louder if you don't answer him right away and the funniest thing is that he will lay on the floor and wimper for attention. If that doesn't work, then he bumps his head (on purpose) onto the wall until a soft thud is heard and comes looking for lovies. A little hug and kiss-then he is on his way. For the most part though, he seems to have adjusted well.

Heidi is great! She is really starting to "wake up". When we talk to her she finds our voice and responds with a smile. She has dimples on both sides of her cheeks that are just so sweet. I can assure you it completely melts her daddy's heart! She rolled over once when she was 4 weeks old and hasn't done it since. Now when she is placed on her belly she either fusses or goes to sleep. I am not sure that belly time is supposed to play out like that. We will keep trying. She is a big sleeper. Most nights she gives us a 5 or 6 hour stretch. We certainly can't complain. As I say often, she is a keeper!

As far as Karl and I, we feel so very blessed. God has blessed our lives with two beautiful and healthy children. Although we are more tired than before and it seems that we haven't had "us" time in a long time, all the smiles, giggles, and love in our house makes us feel very complete.

Here are a few pics to leave you with:

Heidi's first picture with mom.
Heidi's first picture with dad. First family picture.
Karl Mikal sharing his bed with Heidi.

Karl Mikal sharing the bouncy seat with Heidi.

Karl and Annahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14059736944728285626noreply@blogger.com4
